Ulissi dominates the field in Šternberk, Lampre take second win!
The Italian favourite for today's queen stage Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) proved to be the strongest in the last of three concluding hilly laps around Šternberk. He was taken care of by his teammates coming to the penultimate climb before a group of four formed, including the local favourite Karel Hník (VERVA ActiveJet), 45 years old matador Davide Rebellin (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) and the leader after stage 1, Sebastian Langeveld (Cannondale Drapac). The quartet started the final climbing together, but it was Ulissi who again emerged in the main square all alone.
He could afford to savour the tasty win before Hník came across the line some thirty seconds later to win the sprint for second. Forever young Rebelling takes third, Langeveld had to settle for fourth. Ulissi, the winner of six stages at the Giro d'Italia, now takes the lead in the general classification before Langeveld and Rebellin. The Italian rider also sits on the top of the point's classification, while Philipp Walsleben (Beobank - Corendon) went on to secure his lead in the mountain competition. The best young rider is the Czech rider Michal Schlegel (Klein Constantia) and the award for combativity went to Georg Zimmermann (Felbermayr Simplon Wels).
