Ulissi overall winner, Planckaert takes the stage win
Italian Diego Ulissi from Lampre - Merida finished safely in the front group to secure his overall win ahead of Dutch Sebastian Langeveld (Cannondale - Drapac) and an old hand Davide Rebellin (CCC Sprandi Polkowice) who rounds up the podium. Belgian rider, Baptiste Planckaert (Wallonie - Bruxelles), took his season's fourth win when outfoxing the field. He even had some time to take a breather before crossing the line, the second rider, Dutch sprinter Wouter Wippert (Cannondale - Drapac), was quite a few meters behind with Spanish Ivan Garcia (VERVA ActiveJet) third. Thanks to his today's placing, Wippert will take home the point's classification award. The winner of the mountain's competition - German Philipp Walslebene (Beobank - Corendon) had been already known after yesterday's stage and today he managed to cross the line to finish it off.
The home riders have been showing very good legs throughout the whole race. A proof of this be the best lad in the young rider category, Michal Schlegel (Klein-Constantia), and Karel Hník (VERVA ActiveJet) who narrowly missed the podium with an overall fourth place.
How it unfolded:
The Sunday's final day of the elite Czech stage race wasn't to be the most difficult one, but a drama was always expected. 157 km route from Olomouc to Dolany ending with 9 hilly laps was marked by a six men breakaway comprised of Pole Pawel Cieslik (VERVA ActiveJet), Slovenien Jon Božič (Adria Mobil), Belgian Wietse Bosmans (Beobank-Corendon), Dutch Martijn Verschoor (Novo Nordisk), Czech Michael Kukrle (Whirlpool - Author) and Dutch Sjoerd Kouwenhoven (Metec TKH Continental). The breakaway riders rolled into the first circuit with an advantage of 4:30 on the main group. This wouldn't change much for another two laps. Starting the fourth lap, the gap began to fall down quickly. Entering the sixth circuit, the breakaway had only 65 seconds cushion on the pursuers led by Cannondale riders. The riders in green continued their endeavour and it wouldn't last a whole lap before the brave six were caugt. The last three laps got gradually faster as the Cannondale and Lampre-Merida were taking charge of the affairs at the front of the bunch. The bunch was shattered in groups as a result.
However, the fast pace of Lampre came to nothing in terms of stage win as their elite sprinter Sacha Modolo had been dropped out much earlier. In the last lap, the scene was therefore open for quite a wide range of riders to shine. One of them, a strong up and coming sprinter, Baptiste Planckaert, eventually produced a perfectly timed attack to scoop the win.
